Why do you need a coffee table?

We have come to think that no sofa is complete unless faced with a long, low table on which ashtrays, books, magazines, newspapers, accessories, plants, flowers, and snacks abound. Most coffe tables, though, seem to have been designed only for the long, low, open look.

They have no storage space for the things needed in a conversation area, are too low to be reached comfortably from the sofa and to give foot room, and if in scale with the sofa, usually block traffic, especially for the middle seating positions. The most useful coffe tables are about 20 inches high and offer some storage space. Their tops are durable and their supports strong, so they cannot be tipped easily.
