Conversation thrives in a warm, friendly atmosphere if the architecture, furnishings, and accessories are spirited but not overpowering, if distractions are minimized, and if sounds are softened. Segregation from noise and traffic, and good ventilation (particularly if some members of the household smoke) help create pleasantly intimate and relaxed surroundings conducive to social interaction. Flexible seating arrangements that allows easy eye contact yet sufficient personal space for everyone are generally more successful than rigid built-in seating units, furniture lining the walls of the room, or too many large couches. They very formal parlor (from the French parler. “to talk”) or sitting room of past eras, used only on special occasions when someone came “to call,” is not suited to most current lifestyles, activity patterns, or budgets.
A large space may accommodate a secondary seating group or activity center for one to four people. Usually smaller than the primary grouping, the additional furnishings may consist of two easy chairs with a table and reading lamp, a window seat, a game table and chairs, a writing desks, and /or a comfortable reading chair with good lighting, or a piano. |
Group conversation is also the normal accompaniment of meals because the furniture and its arrangements afford ideal conditions for an hour or so. Terraces and patios are natural conversation centers as well when they offer good seating, privacy, and some degree of shelter.
